Inooro FM

Posted on May 20, 2014

Here in Kenya, Inooro FM is huge. It is a Kikuyu radio station and is broadcast all over the country. In the words of Ron Burgundy, it's kind of a big deal. So, imagine the excitement of 15 kids from Eburru who went to Nairobi to be on Inooro FM live. Even waking up at 4AM couldn't deter their energy. This was a chance of a lifetime for many of them, and for some of them it was their very first trip to Nairobi, ever. We planned to leave ...

Road Tripping

Posted on May 11, 2014

I love road trips. I mean really love road trips. To me, there is almost nothing better than driving somewhere, soaking up the journey along the way to the destination. Something about seeing God's creation from the view of a dashboard, watching sunsets and sunrises, seeing neon signs flicker as I go by, something about that is good for my soul. Something about that allows me time to slow down, reflect, and enjoy all that is before me. Rich ...

A few things here and there

Posted on April 16, 2014

It's been a while since I wrote last, so I thought I'd make it up to you by sharing this awesome picture of Kamau and his kitten. I'm actually posting the picture of Kamau because he will finally be going to school in May. I'm so happy for him, and he is super excited as well. The best part of the story is Kamau will actually be going to Camp Brethren School in Eburru. After months of trying to get him into Gilgil Special School, ...

January Update

Posted on February 4, 2014

How can it be January is already gone? Seems like January flew by without much warning. It's funny how here days can go by so slowly, but months can go at warp speed. January meant the start of a new school year, and the kids all seem to be really happy to be back in classes. I think they get bored after being home for a month, and I know they would rather be in school than doing all the chores at home :-) This year at Camp Brethren School ...

December Update

Posted on December 25, 2013

I have a confession. This Christmas season I have been filled with wonder, but not the wonder with which I wanted to be filled. I wanted to spend this month being filled with the awe and wonder of Christ coming as a baby born in a manger. To contemplate this great and amazing gift. That's not what happened though. Instead, I have wondered why people are so quick to respond to crazy things said in the media. For example, “Santa just IS ...

November Update

Posted on December 7, 2013

November was a good month overall, and in fact, if I had written this update a week ago I would have nothing bad to report at all. But, I waited one week too long in order to just tell you about rainbows and puppy dogs...figuratively speaking of course. I was again reminded of God's deep, deep love for us this month as I read through my devotions. For a couple weeks the reading was from Hosea. All about God redeeming us even in spite of how ...

October Update

Posted on November 4, 2013

When life is heavy and hard to take, go off by yourself. Enter the silence. Bow in prayer. Don't ask questions: Wait for hope to appear. Don't run from trouble. Take it full-face. The “worst” is never the worst. -Lamentations 3:28-30 MSG In a lot of ways October was just a continuation of September. A lot of hard things, some easy things. This update sort of reflects those things. I'm having a hard time summing up everything in a neat and ...

September Update

Posted on September 27, 2013

Life in Eburru has officially gotten hard. It's not hard because I have to fetch water from a well and carry it to my house. It's not hard because I have no running water and for the last year have been taking “bucket showers.” It's not hard because I have to heat water on the stove to take a shower, or to wash dishes. It's not hard because I have to wash my clothes by hand. It's not hard because I have to go to the school to ...

July – August Update

Posted on August 15, 2013

One year ago today I was walking around London, waiting my arrival in my new home. It hardly seems possible it has been a year already since I left the comfort of Colorado and headed to Eburru. These last few weeks have been jam packed with activity here. We had two teams from DHI/DC, a Pastor's Conference, a team from DCC, and an Art Camp with kids from Mathare coming up to Eburru. There are still some folks here, and will be a couple more ...

June Update

Posted on July 9, 2013

Right now I'm sitting in the Great Rift Valley Lodge, using their fast internet, drinking a Coke, and listening to a huge thunderstorm come rolling through. There's something really great about Kenya rain storms; they are so powerful and you can see them coming for miles and I almost never want them to end. Everything gets so refreshed and clean when the rain comes. I could get all spiritual on you now and compare the rain storm to God washing ...
